Artist Statement This is where I’m expected to say something gloriously intelligent while being unintelligible. Where I will use loquacious phrases and words like “resonate connectivities, post modernist dialogue dramaturgically speaking, signifying embodiment of problematizations, artistical profundity which inhabits those interstitial spaces, transcending physicality while underscoring man's existential nature, the neo-contemporary impressionism surpasses the occidental limitless space created by suggestive modernism, coupling of deep perspectives, with images that are magnetically charged with diminishing pensiveness…” all in one sentence. But sorry, I can’t and I won’t. In this art world confused by muddled thinking and even more muddled language, all I can say is that I hope to present images that cause the viewer to at least say, “I have never thought of it that way before”. I have been making images for more than 20 years and that philosophy has always been my guide. I have been a ‘on and off’ active social activist for much longer and that also influences much of my work. In Jamaica where my process began, I won many national photographic awards, and in 1999 had my first one-man exhibition at Jamaica’s most sought-after commercial gallery. Previously and since, I have participated in several group exhibitions including those hosted by Jamaica’s National Gallery. My images have moved from the purely representational to the story form, from images created then recorded by the camera, to post-camera digital constructions. Working digitally allows me to explore stories further, and the computer gives me the ability to refresh my images, a continuous evolution. I came to Florida in 2001 with the intention of ‘broadening my horizons’, continuing to create images that are ‘beyond the ordinary’. My images are often not ‘beautiful’ in the general sense, but meaningful and thought-provoking… bringing together incongruous visual elements in a visual commentary with social, political or religious overtones. These images lend themselves to multiple interpretations. I believe that those such as I should hold a critical mirror to the rest of the society. The reflection might not be the same as that in your mirror. It might be challenging, discomfiting, even downright disturbing. Or it might be an improved version of your own illusions, or delusions. But if it connects with you for even for a moment, I have achieved something as an artist. While the premier goal of any working artist today is sell his art to put food on the table, many make art into a commodity instead of a love, a passion, a sharing with the public, and thus make themselves not much more than used car salesmen. I want to sell my work… because that is the best vindication of my talent. But I also want to make myself accessible to those who share my art. This is why there are no prices and sizes, no paypal or shopping cart, or visa logo. There are no gimmicks or bells and whistles to dazzle you… just a simple site, user-friendly, with a contact easy to reach… “Hello, Louis Davis here”. I promise, no ‘dramaturgically speaking’ or ‘interstitial transcendence’ will come out of my mouth. Other Things. Of course in these times, its difficult to support oneself solely on one’s emerging art. So I do other things. I have some expertise and talent in graphic design, as well as I’m a pretty good photographer in the areas of creative portraiture, sports, stage productions, food, products and a couple of other specialist stuff. Of course you won’t know if I do it well unless you ask me. And if I’m crappy at it, I will tell you that’s not my line. I bring the same earnestness to your needs as I do to my art … and hopefully, the same creative zest. I am proud of my work and welcome exchanges. Feel free to drop me a line.
